The Craft Economy: Indie Music Universe Band of the Week

Posted by Guelixa Garcia On June - 15 - 2010

the craft economyToronto’s The Craft Economy—whose members originally hail from Guelph, Montreal, Vancouver and PEI—has a sound inspired by ‘70s punk rock and ‘80s new wave, and is guided by a love of fun, well-crafted and danceable pop songs. They’ve brought their energetic live show to stages at NxNE, CMF, Pitter Patter Festival and POP Montreal.

The band is currently working on its debut full-length recording, which follows the success of “Is On Your Side EP” (2008) and “All On C EP” (2007).  The as-yet untitled record will be released in early summer 2010.

“Is On Your Side” was released to great reviews, receiving tons of airplay in 2009 across the country, including daily play on CBC Radio 3 and  spending 11 weeks on Radio 3's Top 30 (hitting #4 on March 20th, 2009) with the poppy synth-fueled, “Big Purse, Lil Dawg”.  It also made the 2009 Radio 3's Top-103 year-end list and hit #3 on the Canadian Campus Radio charts on Jan. 10, 2009 (Chartattack.com) after getting lots of play at campus radio stations from Victoria, BC to Sackville, NB.

Beware Fashionable Women: Indie Music Band of the Week

Posted by Mike Wilson On September - 21 - 2009

Beware Fashionable WomenBeware Fashionable Women (BFW to their friends), collectively are respectable musicians who possess the ability to be the worst celebrities.  They are four guys who look exactly like any other four guys you would find in a local ma and pa music shop or record store.

No, you won’t find their picture gracing the cover of their album.  Their sweaters hold as much appeal as their faces do.  What you will find however is a collection of songs that cover all the bases of the great potential of indie rock (whatever that means anymore).

BFW appreciate the irony of They Might Be Giants, the dire lyrical nature of The Eels, and the melodic sweetness of Elvis Costello.  Why must a band only encompass one version of that vague idea that is pop music?  BFW understands that labels, managers, bookers, and indeed the listening public would much prefer a band that stuck to one thing and repeated themselves into oblivion.  This is why BFW is destined for failure.  The inclusion of jazz voicings, Beach Boy harmonies, and Latin rhythms is only a sliver of the variety the band explores to break up the monotony that often defines their genre. Music Review: Suddyn’s “Dark Lights” EP

Posted by Kristin Anderson On September - 4 - 2009

suddyn - dark lightsBy Kristin Anderson

Brace yourself my little indie music monkeys. In a defiant search for authenticity and a passionate attempt at leaving a real mark, SUDDYN has graced us with some real indie gold. This band most certainly means to stay around by connecting with its audience and proving its dedication by delivering a sound from the depths of their rocker souls.

I got the pleasure of listening to the EP "Dark Lights," which was recorded in Grouse Lodge (an exceptional residential studio which has been home to some amazing artists like Snow Patrol, Muse, REM and Michael Jackson to name a few!). “Dark Lights" was mastered by John Davis, whose clients include Snow Patrol, Artic Monkeys, REM and Led Zeppelin.

These two Montauk brothers and two Irish childhood friends came together and SUDDYN was born. Combining a emotionally driven sound with style and intensity that infuses the music with a deep sense of drama, these artists have not forfeited true passion in exchange for the security of a stamped out pop sound. With influences like Radiohead, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, U2, Muse, Queen, ELO, Remy Zero, Led Zepplin, Harry Chapin, Gordon Lightfoot, The Guess Who, T. Rex, Beck, Bowie, Spacehog, etc…. it is no surprise that SUDDYN has drawn on the influences of the talent in our music roots to initiate a sound worthy of rock anthems.

The Boost of Independent Music

Posted by Mike Wilson On March - 5 - 2009

eguitarBy Peter Bartos

These days music is predominantly seen as a by-product of entertainment. Big record companies contract only musicians who seem to be popular and profit-making. Songs we hear on radio sound as they originated from one and the same "hit making" computer program performed by convertible artists. Listeners are filled up with a mash of irrelevance and musical boredom.

There are only few people who intensively engage themselves with serious music to discover their own musical taste and style while the majority is bothered with the same song seven times a day on mainstream radio stations or on TV. Most popular musicians are hunting for money and fame while music as an art form gets more and more negligible among mainstream artists.

As a consequence of this, the independent music scene becomes more and more popular as it can be seen from sales figures and music charts. But what is independent music or indie music? On the one hand it stands for independence from major commercial record labels and on the other hand it means an autonomous, do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing. Despite popular associations with Acoustic Alternative Rock, Indie Music is not a genre. Indie music is not confined to a specific style of music, it can cover everything from Indie Rock, Punk, Rap, Country, Emo, Blues, Jazz and everything in between.
