Mad Planet: Indie Music Universe Band of the Week

Posted by Guelixa Garcia On December - 12 - 2010

Mad PlanetWhile most bands only dream of finding the right chemistry, Los Angeles-based duo Mad Planet oozed it from the very beginning.  Vocalist/bassist Cooper Gillespie and drummer Greg Gordon were bartending at the now defunct Hollywood nightclub Safari Sam’s when sparks flew–both musically and romantically–and they decided to pair up as a couple and a band.

The duo immediately discovered a shared love of trip-hop, rock and jazz. “We wanted to go in more of a Massive Attack, Portishead direction,” says Gordon, who had previously been a member of the Nervous Return, a punk-rock outfit that toured with the likes of Blink 182 and No Doubt.  Gillespie had fronted Bang Sugar Bang, an aggressive punk-rock trio, and felt compelled to try something new.

Mad Planet began recording their debut album in early 2009, using their Silver Lake apartment as a studio.  Gillespie and Gordon wanted to craft their own distinct sound and turn their musical vision into a reality, so they decided to record and produce the album themselves.  “It felt great to do everything just the way we wanted it,” says Gillespie.

Adam Payne: Indie Music Universe Artist of the Week.

Posted by Guelixa Garcia On October - 24 - 2010

Adam PayneThe problem with rising acoustic talents is that a lot of them sound the same; but there is no mistaking the sultry sounds of Adam Payne.  With a smile and sound as big as his afro, Adam entertains full crowds with his fusion of Funk, R&B, Folk, and Acoustic.  There’s no denying his musical talents…so the question is, who is he?

Adam is about as eclectic as his sound.  He was born in Lynn, Massachusetts to an Italian mother and African American father.  In the late 80's, Adam and his family moved to Sarasota, Florida.  By the age of 8, Adam drew his musical inspiration not from haughty music teachers, such as Mozart or Beethoven, but from Saturday morning cartoons, Sonic the hedgehog and Mario.  Adam picked up the piano as he mimicked the music from cartoons and video games.  During his senior year of High School he took on the guitar and the drums.  Payne has shared the stage with artists ranging from the Avett Brothers to The Pharcyde and members of the Wu-Tang Clan.  He has collaborated with Artists all over the globe, and lends his writing, production and vocal talents to projects of all kinds, including producing and composing the music for a documentary film about the Rwandan Genocide entitled 'Coexist.'

Shoot The Messenger: Indie Music Artist of the Week

Posted by Guelixa Garcia On September - 26 - 2010

Shoot The MessengerWhen contractor Rob Frail lost a computer programming gig in 2003, he seized the chance to listen more closely to the voices that were harmonizing in his head, and wrote their songs.  These songs combined themes of social injustice and quirks of love with compelling music.  Think Bob Dylan meets David Byrne; they fall madly in love.

"Dylan!? Ha!" An audacious reference, for sure, but those who hear his music agree (more later).  When Frail finds a passion (why can't you have more than one?), his commitment is all-consuming. Armed with his computer programming skills, his grandfather’s rhyming dictionary from 1937, and a swaggering over-confidence masking a fear of failure, he put fingers to keyboard and imagination into overdrive.  Soon, he evolved a voice (in all senses of the word) all his own, driven by a disdain for clichés and boredom with Seinfeld reruns. The results were some unusual, yet totally sensical lyrics.

In effect, Frail became a “method songwriter,” with the ability to project himself into a situation, then experience and articulate the emotional consequences.  For example, he wrote a convincing song about war (Alive) without ever having worn a uniform.  Call him an emotional documentarian.

In August 2005, Frail discovered songwriting contests.  His first entry, in American Songwriter magazine’s lyric contest, won Honorable Mention. To date, eleven of his songs have won over twenty awards, including three Honorable Mentions in the prestigious Billboard World Song Contest.  In addition, the lyrics for four of his songs have been published in an international journal of poetry, Shabdaguchha.

Mariami: Indie Music Universe Artist of the Week

Posted by Guelixa Garcia On August - 29 - 2010

MariamiIn her elegant fusion of R&B, Jazz, Hip-Hop and various International influences, Mariami possesses an unrefined quality that is beginning to fade in contemporary songwriting.  Her approach to music is original, yet her sound resonates on a universal level.  Her keen attention to lyrical detail and melody is intelligible, yet her compositions are simple, sexy and inspiring.  With an undying passion for writing and playing music, her talent is undeniable.

With a rich line-up of talent, Mariami and her boys revive the concept of "fresh" and "soul" in ways that are no longer resonant in commercial music today.  Their show is charged with passion, urban edge, and unmistakable talent. Their dynamic energy has audiences feeling inspired, lifted and sexy.  It doesn't get any more righteous than that.

Emerging fresh out of college, and onto the professional music scene, Mariami has already rocked audiences everywhere from Boston's Berklee Performance Center to New York City's famous Bitter End in the village.  With a few honorable accolades under her wing, including her recent designation as Skope Magazine's "Artist to Watch", Mariami needs prove nothing. It's all in the music, and it's all in the soul.

Adam Gilbert: Indie Artist of the Week

Posted by Guelixa Garcia On May - 3 - 2010

Adam GilbertAdam Gilbert is an extremely talented songwriter and performer from the North Jersey/ New York City area.  His most recent success is his absolutely ridiculous music video “Break Through Today” being shown on FUSE TV from his Fishing for Water Album.  This epic music video directed by Adam portrays He-man and Skeletor during their most awkward high school days and the song celebrates the true joys of indie music making by tumbling down barriers harmonically and rhythmically, which somehow work perfectly with the visual.  The resulting sound achieved by the track is something that has not previously been heard.  One review called it “a modern masterpiece of songwriting with a innovative sense of musical adventure”.   Of course you can watch the video here.

While Adam can go dramatically over the top this crafty piano based singer songwriter also produces simple heartfelt music with lyrical and harmonic depth which is heard on one of his more popular songs “All of us are missing” One of the amazing things I admire in Adam’s music is that he does not let his influences dominate the tracks; rather, each artist or act that influenced Gilbert is used as a garnish.

Adam has recently been hard at work on his ambitious 3rd release.  This upcoming double disc will feature the band on one side and a more soloistic artsy approach on the other.  “This next release is all emotional charged composing.  Sometimes things for me can be too thought out so I want to use less of my mind and more emotionally based decisions.  I have found in doing this I have been very pleased with the results and the creative outlets that are sometimes restricted in the word songwriting are no longer there.  Wow that sounds stupidly mysterious, dun dun dun!! Chris Volpe: Indie Music Artist of the Week

Posted by Guelixa Garcia On April - 19 - 2010

Chris VolpeChris Volpe has won multiple awards for his live solo album “Refugee Blues”, recorded in one take, and transformed it into a larger sound in Nashville with his new album “Shipwrecked!”

In 2009, Volpe's new recording Shipwrecked! showcases the expanded sound he calls “surrealist folk.” On the record, Volpe worked with Bob Dylan’s band mate, Donnie Herron; Johnny Cash’s drummer, Kenny Malone; Dave Matthews Band horn player, Jeff Coffin and Patti Griffin’s bassist and cellist Bryn Davies.

Shipwrecked! – Chris Volpe

Nashville's, Chris Volpe is just what music needs. He's uniquely gifted and sits in a great place – to the side of the bland singer/songwriter sect. Its accessible, but much more artsy than the general vibe coming from the genre. His music is part folk, jazz, bluegrass, and acoustic singer/songwriter. But it's the undeniable roosty-Americana sounds that really make his album, Shipwrecked! truly soar!

Songs like Don't Go and Salvation's Round the Bend, make this unique blend work. Ice Upon the Ocean is one of his best. There's a beautiful lilting violin that accompanies Volpe's voice in a dramatic way.

So if you're a fan of the genre, and like artists ranging from Johnny Cash to Griffin House, Nickel Creek to Thad Cockrell, you'll fall in love with this record. This is truly one of the best albums I've heard in a very long time. I honestly hope to meet Volpe in concert and write a live review while in Nashville in the near future.

Nadia Kazmi: Indie Music Artist of the Week

Posted by Mike Wilson On March - 23 - 2010

Rooted in a staunch refusal to be pigeonholed, NADIA KAZMI is as adept at writing a '70s inflected soul groove as she is at writing a singer-songwriter ballad or coming up with a reggae beat.

Nadia, a singer/songwriter from Calgary, Canada, showed a love of words and writing from a very young age, recording an original composition over her mother's favourite tape at the age of 5. She took vocal lessons at 12,  Nadia revisited her love of music at age 16 and hasn't stopped writing or singing since.

She loved the messages in the poetry of Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Leonard Cohen. She connected with the soul of '70s singers like Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin, and later found an appreciation for belting classic rockers like Janis Joplin, Ann Wilson and Freddie Mercury. Bringing all of those influences together on one album is a daunting task, but one that she achieves effortlessly.

"Nadia is bringing something refreshing and new to the music industry with her mix of pop, rock and soul," says Junior's Cave online magazine.

Her debut album, Arrival, "encompasses many genres… in  a woman's quest to find meaning in this life," says the review blog  You Sing, I Write. And just like our own quest for meaning in this life encompasses many facets of our own background, so Nadia manages to combine her myriad music loves into one showcase of powerful vocals and introspective songwriting.
