The Festival That Started It All: Woodstock

Posted by Kristin Anderson On April - 21 - 2010

WoodstockI dream of Woodstock.  I Fantasize that my hippie roots graced the muddy field for one weekend, that I watched Carlos pull away from his guitar believing it was a snake.  Staying awake at the all night bonfire.  Befriending everyone and not being afraid to open my heart and share my love with the people around me.  To hear the sound of history getting made.

This is the reason I go to festivals.  I am a self professed Festie Aid.  Yes, as in reference to band-aids.  I am there to remind the music and the love why they came.  To dance harder than I ever danced, stay up longer than I ever thought possible and meet everyone who is in it with me.  Then drag my muddy blankets home knowing it would take at least three showers to scrub the dirt from the soles of my feet.  So, monkeys, a little festival inspiration for you outdoor loving-music junkies.  I'm right there with you.

Indie fans are you sleeping at night? Do you close the closet door and check under your bed for clowns before you can even think of shutting your eyes? Well, if the Lunestas not working and the Adderall has got you paranoid, you may want to steer clear of some sincerely haunting new tunes from DARK DARK DARK's stunning six-song EP, BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT.

Ranging from sweet melodic symphonies to elaborate theatrical arrangements, DARK DARK DARK is the sound of the ghost that will haunt you. On March 9, Dark Dark Dark released their six-song EP Bright Bright Bright on Supply and Demand Music. Hailing from New Orleans, New York, and Minneapolis, the chamber-folk sextet have yielded a lush and intoxicating follow-up to their 2008 full-length debut, The Snow Magic.

Dark Dark Dark recorded the new EP at Sacred Heart Studios in a former church overlooking Lake Superior, and worked with Minneapolis producer Tom Herbers. Herbers engineered, produced and mixed Bright Bright Bright on analog equipment from start to finish. He encouraged the band to record live as opposed to tracking instruments separately, taking advantage of the band's unique chemistry and using the chapel's natural reverb to amplify the power of their live performances, which are the soul shaking equivilent of being in the middle of a typhoon.

Top 20 Cities With The Hottest Indie Music Venues

Posted by Kristin Anderson On March - 12 - 2010

With respect to our indie roots and a desire as fans and artists, we need to know where we came from and where we are now. Indie music is not about mass production, it is not about trying to fit into a mold to get sold. Indie is the soul of music. The thing that makes music the voice of the people and not the marketing of the masses. The music that saves you when your alone, the sounds that lets you know people still create originally and want to share unconditionally with others.Indie has survived in the face of a social crisis of a culture that has us all begging for fame and believing blindly that it is owed to us with or without effort or struggle. You have heard people say that anything worth having is worth working for. Indie pumps with a blue collar blood and a dedication to the real musician. These artists have embraced an offering of sorts and crafted it without projecting any expectation other than a desire to share and be shared. So,with indie love in our hearts and a respect for the sound that saves us, I have compiled a reference that includes some indie history of the top twenty cities that helped indie music root itself and the top venue in each city to date. My heart is with you indie fans, lets do all that we can to give a little credit where credit is due.
