White Apple Tree: Indie Band of the Week

Posted by Guelixa Garcia On December - 26 - 2010

white apple treeWhite Apple Tree consist of two young brothers with a desire and passion to play music for the world.  The addition of the drummer and bass player complete the sound.  They have over 2,900,000 plays, 2,000,000 profile views on MySpace and 36,000 friends.  They are often compared to Shiny Toy Guns, Coldplay or The Faint, blending blasting dance beats with melodic piano and vocal melodies.  The live show is a high energy performance that brings everybody to the floor.

Their sound has been described as eclectic, complex, occasionally awkward and witty. Although Ryan Lawhon, with brother Taylor Lawhon and drummer Stefan Mac are based out of Northern San Diego and South Orange County, their music is far from the Southern California surf rock norm.  With lush ambient guitars, quirky synths and the occasional “four on the floor” kick, White Apple Tree has created a unique and refreshing take on modern electronic music.

Mad Planet: Indie Music Universe Band of the Week

Posted by Guelixa Garcia On December - 12 - 2010

Mad PlanetWhile most bands only dream of finding the right chemistry, Los Angeles-based duo Mad Planet oozed it from the very beginning.  Vocalist/bassist Cooper Gillespie and drummer Greg Gordon were bartending at the now defunct Hollywood nightclub Safari Sam’s when sparks flew–both musically and romantically–and they decided to pair up as a couple and a band.

The duo immediately discovered a shared love of trip-hop, rock and jazz. “We wanted to go in more of a Massive Attack, Portishead direction,” says Gordon, who had previously been a member of the Nervous Return, a punk-rock outfit that toured with the likes of Blink 182 and No Doubt.  Gillespie had fronted Bang Sugar Bang, an aggressive punk-rock trio, and felt compelled to try something new.

Mad Planet began recording their debut album in early 2009, using their Silver Lake apartment as a studio.  Gillespie and Gordon wanted to craft their own distinct sound and turn their musical vision into a reality, so they decided to record and produce the album themselves.  “It felt great to do everything just the way we wanted it,” says Gillespie.

Doxa Music: Indie Music Universe Band of the Week

Posted by Guelixa Garcia On November - 28 - 2010

doxa musicThey say that Doxa is more than just a band because their desire is that it serves as a springboard to launch other Christian artists who desire to glorify God with their entire lives, including music.  The call to glorify God is worldwide, and so while their first CD is a certain style and has two main songwriters on it, they long to see many more songwriters and musicians with different styles come along and glorify God with them in every facet of life.

Why Doxa? Their response was…We chose the name Doxa for the band and for this music project simply because it's a cool sounding word.  No, just kidding, doxa is actually an old Greek word defined as glory, fame, or honor.  And as every person involved with this project will tell you, we are all about giving glory, fame and honor to our King Jesus Christ.  While the music we make does do exactly that, it does not end there.  We want to give glory to God in everything we do.  We're certainly not perfect people, but we're always checking ourselves to make sure that what we do does, in some way, glorify God.

We could have simply gone with The Matt Tipton Band, but again, we want glory pointing to God, not towards any one of us.  Plus doxa is such an unusual word that it gives us a great chance to describe the meaning behind it to anyone who asks.

John Milstead: Indie Music Universe Artist of the Week

Posted by Guelixa Garcia On November - 21 - 2010

John MilsteadJohn Milstead is an artist you should not miss hearing live.  From a sound that mixes pop, rock, and soul, and a live vocal that is unbelievable.  What else would you expect from a guy who lives down the street from where Elvis was born and raised, Tupelo,Ms.  John is currently working on his new EP which releases this fall- while is first album "Sides of the Soul" makes it's debut onto Pandora Radio, and has sold over 3,000 copies in a short time.  All of the album was written, produced, and performed by Milstead.

Rarely does a debut album/demo by an independent artist sound as compelling as John Milstead’s debut offering, Sides of the Soul.  Heavily influenced by the likes of Sam Cooke and Don Henley, and true to his Tupelo roots, Milstead’s music is the perfect blend of pop, country and soul.  Growing up in Tupelo, Milstead was always around soul and gospel music, and found a way to weave those influences into his own music, always adding a twist of classic soul to his own pop melodies.

Milstead has also been racking up awards rapidly.  He was a winner of the 9th Annual CMT NSAI contest for his song, “Don’t Believe in Love;” a finalist at Atlanta’s Eddie’s Attic singer/songwriter competition in July 2009 and November 2009; and he was Singeruniverse.com’s October 2009 vocalist of the month.

Adam Payne: Indie Music Universe Artist of the Week.

Posted by Guelixa Garcia On October - 24 - 2010

Adam PayneThe problem with rising acoustic talents is that a lot of them sound the same; but there is no mistaking the sultry sounds of Adam Payne.  With a smile and sound as big as his afro, Adam entertains full crowds with his fusion of Funk, R&B, Folk, and Acoustic.  There’s no denying his musical talents…so the question is, who is he?

Adam is about as eclectic as his sound.  He was born in Lynn, Massachusetts to an Italian mother and African American father.  In the late 80's, Adam and his family moved to Sarasota, Florida.  By the age of 8, Adam drew his musical inspiration not from haughty music teachers, such as Mozart or Beethoven, but from Saturday morning cartoons, Sonic the hedgehog and Mario.  Adam picked up the piano as he mimicked the music from cartoons and video games.  During his senior year of High School he took on the guitar and the drums.  Payne has shared the stage with artists ranging from the Avett Brothers to The Pharcyde and members of the Wu-Tang Clan.  He has collaborated with Artists all over the globe, and lends his writing, production and vocal talents to projects of all kinds, including producing and composing the music for a documentary film about the Rwandan Genocide entitled 'Coexist.'
